BUSBY - For 10 years, Phillip Whiteman Jr. has been teaching Northern Cheyenne kids about respect and priorities by convincing them to run a 400-mile relay in January. It seems to be paying off. Every year, about 100 tribal members - most of them grade-schoolers - run 400 miles from Fort Robinson, Neb., to a graveyard in Busby. They run to remember ancestors buried in that graveyard who made the same journey in 1879, but under much different conditions. The kids run with a tribal flag and a staff, and on Wednesday, as the group approached Busby, a young girl named Elena slipped twice in the snow and fell. Both times, she managed to keep the flag in the air. "Cheyenne pride!" the group shouted.

The Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in eastern Montana lies on a blanket of rich coal. But tribal members have never wanted to mine it, even as mining surrounded them. As Daniel Kraker of Arizona Public Radio reports, that may be changing.(Photo: Dan Kraker)
